Marriage records are available from Vital Records from 1919 to present. This record will state that a marriage took place. It will name the two parties, the date of the marriage, and the location of the marriage. To apply to access a marriage certificate, fill out the application provided by the New Jersey Vital Records Website.

The New Jersey Department of State has records of marriages made between 1848 and 1912. They also have some marriage records that were kept earlier than this date. Keep in mind that many marriages were not recorded statewide. Rather, it was local communities that kept marriage records instead.

Complete records include the name, age, and residence of the bride and groom, the parents' names, the date and place of marriage, the officiant, and the groom's occupation. The New Jersey Marriage Index for 1901-2016 is now online for free public use at the Internet Archive. There is a brides index for 1901-2000, a grooms index for some but not all years within 1901-2000, and a combined index that is in roughly chronological order for 2001-2016. Previously, only a few years of the marriage index were available, 1901-1914, and those were only available thanks to an earlier records request we made to the New Jersey State Archives.
